When Diabetes Gets Nervy

Having diabetes can put you at risk for nerve complications—particularly in your feet. This problem is called diabetic neuropathy. If not managed properly, it can be a serious, lifethreatening condition.

One important way to reduce your risk for diabetic neuropathy is to maintain tight control of your blood sugar. However, this isn’t the “sole” strategy, according to a study of 1,100 women and men with type 1 diabetes.

If you suffer from type 1 or type 2 diabetes, here are three other healthy habits that can help you keep your nerves and feet in tiptop shape:

  1. Manage high blood pressure if you have this condition.
  2. Maintain a healthy weight.
  3. If you smoke, quit.
